Cadillac Utilizes Apollo Program Playbook to Construct Squad from Nothing for Melbourne Startline.

Approximately twelve months previously at the Vegas Grand Prix, the Cadillac racing team were at last granted the official approval as F1's latest entrant for the 2026 season. Constructing the team from the ground up has involved a hectic pace of work that the principal, Graeme Lowdon, has compared to the Apollo moon landing. As F1 converges on the Vegas strip this race weekend, Cadillac know the clock is ticking.

The Race Against Time to Australia

At the final race of the championship to be held in the US, with around 100 days to go before they hit the circuit for the first time in Melbourne at the 2026 season opener, Cadillac have come on in leaps and bounds but, in what must seem like a sisyphean task, they are aware there will not be sufficient time.

The technical director, Nick Chester, joined the embryonic operation in March 2023 soon after it was established, when the team were without even an confirmed place. He has been at its heart since then and has a wry smile when thinking about the ride.

“You might get five minutes looking back at what the team has achieved and go: ‘Wow, what an achievement what we’ve done in less than three years,’” he notes. “But then the next minute you think: ‘Well, there is still a significant amount to do.’”

A One-of-a-Kind Opportunity

Chester had success at Renault in Alonso's victorious years of 2005 and 2006 and was in control of technical direction at the recently formed Mercedes electric racing team, but no previous experience has quite compared with the challenge of bringing the iconic American Cadillac marque, a works entry sponsored by the owner, General Motors, into the pinnacle of motorsport.

“Creating an F1 team from nothing, when are you ever going to get a chance to do that?” he observes. “There's nothing comparable. In an well-set team you don’t get the opportunity to transform team culture.”

With every day that elapses focus are more focused on the approaching critical moment in Australia and expectations are being handled.

“One must presume that any new team joining the grid is going to be last but just making it to the starting line will be an feat in itself,” Lowdon noted recently and while Chester shared this view he thought the organization had a reputation to build as well.
“The initial objective we aim to demonstrate is that we deserve to be there,” he says. “So that we turn up and we operate well. We aim to demonstrate that we’re a proper team performing the proper actions on the track. When we’ve shown that we are a legitimate team, then we want to show progression after that.”

Racing Talent and Team Building Effort

In the summer they contracted Checo Pérez and Valtteri as their racers for 2026, a duo distinguished for their vast knowledge in competing at the sharp end in two top-tier teams, Red Bull and Mercedes, and the Finnish driver expressed the attitude of fighting spirit.

“Of course, we’re realistic,” Bottas stated. “There’s going to be a mountain of work to do, and it’s going to be most likely a tough opening, because it's the top level of motorsport. But we aren't joining to remain at the rear. I believe with this structure, with these individuals, these people, there’s no reason why we won't be able to advance swiftly to the front and taste victory.”

To realize that ambition hiring has been in overdrive, with personnel now up to over 400 and scheduled to attain the target of six hundred rapidly. In addition to their existing facility at the Silverstone circuit, the squad are in the midst of building an headquarters at Fishers, Indiana in Indianapolis and there is the GM plant in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they are building the plant to manufacture the power unit, set for the 2029 season – for now they will use Ferrari engines – and the aerodynamic facility in Germany. It is a sophisticated organisation, different from the trend in F1 for greater centralisation, and has prompted the fresh organizational mindset to which the CTO referred.

NASA Model

“It’s highly modelled on the NASA moon mission,” remarked the team principal shortly before the British GP in mid-season. “We have a clear-eyed view, we recognize how challenging it is. The deadlines, are extremely compressed. Alright, it's not a space expedition, but it feels like it sometimes.”

So they have adopted, instead of the traditional management structure, a decentralized management comparable to that of Nasa’s, where there were a assortment of project teams all working on various components of the mission at a multiple sites.

“When you must follow a procedure where someone has a problem and they raise it up to their supervisor, that leader communicates with a supervisor in another department, it travels back down, the process is very slow,” says the CTO. “Therefore we enable team members to handle things directly. Eliminating hierarchical consent for all decisions is so much cleaner and more rapid.”

The Future

The effectiveness of this flexible methodology will be proven in the heat of competition next season and there is no little amount riding on this for F1, too. Cadillac have recruited as their test driver the 25-year-old American Colton Herta
