Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to question specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
